Nonetheless, Mclaughlin is also honest in pointing out the ways that Christians have failed to live as the Bible has told us to and thus the first step forward is repentance. However, in The Secular Creed, Mclaughlin investigates the claims behind these movements ‘ through the lens of scripture and in light of culture’ to distinguish ‘ ideas Christians can and must affirm from ideas Christians cannot and must not embrace.’ Mclaughlin argues these claims are often built on Christian ground. As Christians, we can sometimes feel like we either have to firmly plant these signs or break them down. ![]() For example, Rebecca Mclaughlin points to yard signs in her neighbourhood with the following sayings: this house believes that Black lives matter, Trans rights are human rights. ![]() Many companies, organisations and individuals quickly adopt these ideas to be on the right side of history. Carter was great too, but I felt like I’d read him before, in bits of Percy’s narrative. Sadie was a great character, full of gumption and sass. This series came out before ‘Heroes of Olympus’, but even when Annabeth, Piper, Hazel and Reyna got perspectives, they were always outweighed by the multiple male ones. Yes, at times, it’s hard to distinguish between the two, because as much as they try to tell you they’re different, they’re very alike, BUT, for once, it was nice to see some female representation by Riordan. I definitely think more people should pick up The Kane Chronicles, it’s just as great as it’s brother series, ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’. And, I have to say, I loved the trilogy overall. This raises a hard question: How–if at all– can this living world of mathematics become accessible?īARRY MAZUR: I can’t answer that question, but I can offer some comments. The disconnection between the inner, lived world of mathematicians and the mainstream of intelligent people is very deep, despite the sensual character of mathematics that you describe so well in your recent book, Imagining Numbers: (particuarly the square root of minus fifteen). Doubtless this is partly due to the way it is taught, but such teaching is widespread, the product of good intentions and much effort.
